We had first-time winners, multi-time
winners winning again and some fantastic efforts in the northeast all
weekend long. If the first few weeks of the season have been any
indication, we're in for a heck of a summer.
Without further ado, let's look at who
made The Podium this week:
1. Wayne Helliwell Jr., Dover, N.H.
After two straight weeks of finishing
as the bridesmaid, Helliwell finally did what we all figured he would
before too long: He won an ACT Late Model Tour race. Helliwell took
over the ACT points lead after winning his first career race in the
Spring Green 112 at Devil's Bowl Speedway on Sunday afternoon.
It was Helliwell's third-straight Top-2
finish to begin 2012, and it came one year after a trip off the track
at Devil's Bowl planted him in a muddy swamp.
2. Joey Doiron, Berwick, Maine
The former ACT Rookie of the Year won
his first career PASS North Series Super Late Model event, dominating
the second half of the season-opening SouthernMaineMotors.com 150 at
Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on Saturday afternoon. Doiron's win came
by a margin of victory of 6.9 seconds.
3. Keith Rocco, Wallingford, Conn.
Even a damaged race car can't stop
Rocco, the 2010 NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national champion,
who piloted his SK Modified to his fourth win of the season at
Waterford Speedbowl in Connecticut on Saturday night.
Honorable Mention
Connecticut driver Shaun Buffington won
the 25-lap NELCAR Legends feature at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on
Saturday... Aaron Fellows of Croydon, N.H., won his second straight
Late Model feature event at Twin State Speedway... Walt Hammond of
Canaan, N.H., won one-half of the twin Pro Stock features on Canaan
Speedway's opening day and took the overall win... Carey Martin of
Denmark, Maine, won the 75-lap PASS Sportsman feature at Beech Ridge
Saturday... Vince Quenneville Jr. of Brandon, Vt., won the NASCAR
Whelen All-American Series DIRT Modified feature on opening day at
Devil's Bowl Speedway on Sunday.
